Each year the captain of Tenby Golf Club nominates a charity to support though Fundraising events in their year of Captaincy. For 2021/22, captain Charles Dredge selected Epilepsy Wales in honour of his cousins’ son, Matt Heiling of Porthcawl, who tragically passed away with this condition aged only 25.

Tragically, in April, Charles died unexpectedly, leaving his family and clubhouse friends in shock. They rallied around and, led by previous captain Austin Davies amongst others, the Club decided to honour Charles’ wishes and dedicated fundraisers to the charity he nominated.

As of November 1 the amount raised by the members of Tenby Golf Club was £8,144.33.

Notable events were the Club Captains Day held on a beautiful sunny day in July. Over £1,000 was raised and the clubhouse terrace hosted a magnificent BBQ with friends and family gathered, raising a glass in honour of Charlie.

In August, the Captains Charity Day saw 22 teams of four players taking on the course on another bright and breezy summer’s day. The camaraderie and sportsmanship marked a positive milestone for the friends and family of both Charlie and Matt - the families of whom were both present on the day - with one of Charlie’s sons stepping up and taking part in a team. Over £4,500 was raised, with a charity auction, an amazing raffle and a superb set of prizes.

The Carmarthen Rotary Club, the Tenby Seniors Section , the Tenby Mixed Committee, the Rabbits and other donations have all made a real difference.

Diana Dredge (Charlie’s widow ) said “I can’t thank the people who made this happen enough. Austin Davies (Tenby’s last club captain) has ensured all details and arrangements for this fundraiser were in place for his friend - and that is a great tribute in itself to Charlie. I know Matt’s family are so thankful for your generosity. Charlie would also be so proud that the friends he made at Tenby have stood by him and shown up for him - even in the most difficult of circumstances”.

On November 1, Diana and Austin presented the final cheque to Fional Kettell (Operations Manager) and Sue Hamill (South Wales Outreach officer) for Epilepsy Wales.

Fiona said: “We would like to thank all of those associated with this fundraiser at Tenby Golf Club for their tremendous efforts and results. We will be using this funding to deliver Epilepsy Awareness, first aid and rescue medication training to individuals supporting children with complex and life threatening epilepsy across South Wales. Your donations will really make a difference.”
