Friends of a brave Tenby lady battling cancer for over six years have set up a fundraiser to allow her to make her dream of travelling to see the Northern lights a reality.
Sian Phillips and Charlotte Davies hope that the fundraising GoFundMe page will allow brave Joanne Bateman of The Glebe - an incredibly strong woman who has been battling cancer since 2014, a chance to fulfil some of the wishes on her bucket list.
At the age of 28 Jo was diagnosed with breast cancer, and after six rounds of chemotherapy and 32 rounds of radiotherapy she believed that she was on the road to recovery. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the end of the road.
In 2016 following a routine scan, it was discovered that Jo had developed tiny tumours all over her thyroid. It was cancerous, and four months later her thyroid was removed, resulting in Jo needing mediation for the rest of her life.
Last November, Jo and her partner Billy discovered an abnormality in her armpit, and after a biopsy and scan, a lump was found, which was removed successfully, but tragically shortly after, a CT scan confirmed Jo had secondary cancer in her thigh bone, which has been deemed incurable.
“I have been fighting this disease for the past 6 years, it’s been a complete an utter battle - I don’t know how long I have left....so I want to make the most of life,” said thirty-five-year-old Jo.
On the fundraising to help raise money towards Jo’s dream, her friend Sian said: “Jo has always wanted to go and see the Northern lights, and trying out the snow activities of Northern Finland, so we would love to get her to Finland this winter while she is still well enough, and we are doing different things to raise funds to make her dream come true before she gets too ill.
“I will also be having 10 inches cut off my hair to help raise money and my hair will be sent to The Little Princess Trust.
“We are looking at doing an online raffle with prizes donated by local business and ones further afield. At the moment we are trying to get prizes for the raffle and once we have enough we will arrange a date for this,” she continued.
Charlotte said: “I went to school with Jo and hearing her story was just heartbreaking - so I will do everything I can to make this dream come true.
“We have raised just over £1,400 so far through social media.
“We plan to put together a prize draw so would appreciate any local businesses who could kindly donate a small product or service to use as prizes.
“Hopefully with this much help and support, we can get Jo to see the Northern lights!,” she added.
