For as long as most people can remember, the two minutes silence in Tenby on?Remembrance Day has been signalled by the firing of lifeboat maroons from the coastguard station. But on?Sunday morning, the congregation assembled around the War Memorial in Trafalgar Square waiting in vain for the maroon signalling at 11 am. Nothing happened.
Not a sound stirred the air.?Some thought the loud explosion of the maroons must have been lost in the strong north-east wind. But in fact, no maroons were fired. Station Officer H. J.?Kelly, who has been in charge of Tenby?Coastguard Station in?Broadwell Hayes only since July explained: “I knew nothing about it all. I’ve been in the coastguard service sine 1946, but I’ve never come across this practice before. It must be a local thing.” He added that he would be quite prepared to accept this duty in the future if it was required of him. Obviously there was a lack of liaison on this occasion. But the silence was reverently observed in all parts of the town despite the absence of the maroons.
