Preseli Pioneers Explorer Scout Unit is a flourishing Scout section for 14 to 18-year-olds that covers a wide area, with young people from Tenby, Blaunwaen, Carmarthen, Narberth, Meidrim and Clunderwen all involved.

The unit was set up in 2015 with just five teenagers, but now has 26 members and a waiting list to join. The Explorers employ the positive characteristics of loyal, helpful, compassionate, dedicated, thrifty and trustworthy to each other and their communities. They meet Monday evenings either in Narberth Bus Stop and Laugharne Scout Hut.

Preseli Pioneers recently took on a lease agreement to use and renovate the Laugharne Scout site after it has been disused for 12 years.

The site included a boathouse, canoes, kayaks, aailing boats and a safety boat. The Explorers have worked very hard to clear and renovate the site, with the aim to learn and participate in water activities.

They have regularly fundraised at local events to raise money to fix and renovate the building, equipment and gain qualifications to use the site. Indeed, the older Explorers have completed their RYA 2 powerboat course and VHF radio qualifications to ensure communications can be maintained between the safety, land and sailing teams.

The aim is to support younger Scout sections in the future from Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire to benefit from these facilities.

Meanwhile, the Explorers themselves are grateful for the support received from the Freemasons of West Wales, who have given a donation to enable the unit to purchase essential VHF radio equipment to ensure safety is prioritised and maintained.

George Bancroft and Freemason Patrick presented the cheque at Monday evening’s session on the Laugharne Scout site.

The Freemasons of West Wales have also made a generous donation to Hannah Bailey who is one of the three Explorers who have been selected to represent Wales at the World Scout Jamboree 2019 in America.

Preseli Pioneer Explorers are very grateful for the charitable donations as without them the Explorer Scouts could not consider using the water equipment this year.
