DOZENS of organisations from across Wales gathered outside the Senedd in Cardiff Bay for Earth Day yesterday (Wednesday, April 22) as communities, campaigners, workers, artists and young people came together to call for urgent action on climate, nature and the cost of living ahead of the Senedd elections.

The event, organised by Climate Cymru showcased the growing Cymru Together initiative, a campaign uniting communities around three shared priorities: making life fairer through warmer homes and cheaper clean energy, putting power in people’s hands through community benefit from renewables, and restoring nature for everyone.

Set against the backdrop of rising energy bills, cold homes and growing public concern over nature loss, the Earth Day gathering brought together organisations from across Wales in a vibrant call to action just weeks before voters head to the polls on May 7.

A centrepiece of the event was the unveiling of a large-scale artistic jigsaw by Welsh artist Gus Payne, symbolising the interconnectedness of energy, communities and nature. The “Line of Connection” display featured jigsaw pieces created by communities across Wales, showing how local action is helping build national solutions.

Speakers included Jason Wyatt of Tata Unite, Grace Gavigan, Roshan Devonish, Lydia Godden, Nwaeke Jeremiah and Angie Kirby, alongside the Children’s Poet Laureate for Wales, Bardd Plant Cymru.

The event reflected strong public support for climate and nature action in Wales, with recent polling showing three in five people are worried about climate change, rising to almost four in five among younger people aged 16–29.

A spokesperson for Climate Cymru said:

“[Yesterday] showed the strength of feeling across Wales for action that connects warmer homes, cheaper energy, good jobs and thriving nature. The pieces really are fitting together, and communities across Wales are ready for the next Senedd to match that ambition.”

The gathering was followed by a networking lunch and live music session at the Urdd Centre, continuing conversations on how Wales can build a fairer, greener future together.
