December saw the Swingin Nettles appearing for Narberth Jazz at the Plas Hotel, Narberth. They very kindly stepped in at the last moment as, owing to illness, the scheduled band the Strumble Strutters were unable to appear.

Local jazz lovers were, however, treated to some brilliant playing from the-five piece ensemble that evening.

The Swingin Nettles are a well-known Gypsy Jazz band from South Pembrokeshire who play in the style of the greats such as Stephane Grapelli and Django Rheinhardt.

They are Robbie Godwin (violin, vocals), Vince Pereczes (guitar, vocals), Will Hughes (accordion, vocals), David Griffiths (double bass), and Jac Bradford ( guitar, vocals).

The blending of the guitars and bass with the melodic weaving of Robbie’s violin and Will’s accordion on such classic tunes as Lady be Good and Minor Swing ensured a delightful evening’s music, according to Narberth Jazz treasurer Gordon Barry. They made people’s feet begin to  tap and even persuaded some to commit to the dance floor.

A great evening on a dark wet December was had by all.

By coincidence the next ‘gig’ on January 11 will also be a Gypsy Jazz and Swing band, the Hot Club Gallois - something to look forward to in the New Year.
