Tenby’s events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War last weekend were described as ‘very emotional’ by local councillors this week.
A special ‘We Will Remember Them - Battle’s End Concert’ took place on Saturday and a service of Remembrance Sunday saw the unveiling of a project to add a list of names that were on the Role of Honour in St. Mary’s Church to the War Memorial.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby Town Council, Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, said that the concert at the De Valence Pavilion where both Tenby and Whitland Male Choirs performed, along with Goodwick Brass Band, was ‘absolutely amazing’.
“It was very emotional, and such a lovely night, and I’d like to thank all those that performed for supporting the event. The Mayor held a civic reception prior to the event where prestigious dignitaries attended from around Pembrokeshire, including HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, the chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, and MP Simon Hart, along with other organisations’ leaders,” she said, also thanking the Tenby Sea Cadets for their involvement.
Clr. Laurence Blackhall said that the concert was ‘extraordinary’, with Clr. Mrs. Sam Skyrme-Blackhall agreeing, stating to her colleagues that it was ‘really moving’.
“I know this marked the 100th anniversary of the First World War ending, but there was such positivity surrounding the night, that I wonder if we could do something similar to mark the occasion every year,” she suggested.
A substantial amount of money raised from the concert will go towards the Royal British Legion.
The Mayor, Clr. Mrs Sue Lane, said that the evening was ‘absolutely superb’ and also praised those involved with the Remembrance Sunday service, and the unveiling of the names on the cenotaph.
“I’d just like to thank all the hard work and dedication of former Mayor, John Griffiths, in researching the names to add to the War Memorial. He did a phenomenal job and we are all very appreciative,” she said.
“I’d also like to thank members of Tenby Masonic Lodge for supporting the project with funding, along with Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and other independents that donated towards the project. Abbey Masonry and Neil Webb have done us proud with the work they carried out.
“The project has left a wonderful legacy for Tenby.
“The services on Sunday at the cenotaph and church were also absolutely superb and I’d like to thank all the people of Tenby, the schools and organisations that attended,” added Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane.
