A review of the electoral boundaries in Pembrokeshire has been accepted although multi-member wards are not wanted.
The Boundary Commission’s draft review of local authority boundaries, carried out on a national basis, is subject to a consultation running until September.
Pembrokeshire County Council agreed its response at full council on July 26 following a seminar to discuss the proposals in June.
Suggestions for changes in the county include moving some wards into others to create an average number of constituents per member – 1,574 electors per councillor.
It would not mean a reduction in councillors from the 60 currently in Pembrokeshire but the Commission does propose reducing the number of electoral wards to 58.
Other proposals discussed include combining Crymych and Maenclochog, Cilgerran and Eglwyswrw as well as adding New Moat to Wiston.
Concerns were raised about taking Nolton out of the Camrose ward, and potential impact on Roch School, as well as moving Dreen Hill to St Ishmaels to counter the population increase in Johnston.
Clr. Reg Owens, representative of St Ishmaels, said more consideration of the communities needed to be made by the Commission.
“All they seem to have done is drawn lines and looked at figures,” he told full council.
His ward would see Dreen Hill, Walwyns Castle and Tiers Cross “chucked in” he said.
At the June seminar Clr. Owens said this was a “step too far.”
Confusion could be created by warding previously whole wards such as Saundersfoot councillors said.
Clr. Tony Baron, on behalf of Clr. Aaron Carey, said that a multi-member ward in Pembroke St Mary was not supported, contrary to previously recorded comments.
Monkton and Fishguard north east and north west were other areas whether multi-members representation was suggested.
Twenty-eight electoral wards will remain unchanged.
All changes are to be put in place in time for the 2022 local elections.
Councillors agreed that their comments be sent to the Commission as well as reasserting their desire to see the number of councillors reduced.
