Primary school children in the Pembroke area with an appetite for languages will be offered the chance to sample Chinese (Mandarin) in the New Year.
Pembroke based June Francis grew up in China and Mandarin is her first language. June, who came to live in the UK some twenty years ago, is fluent in English and has completed a Business Studies course at Pembrokeshire College.
Since then June has worked as an administrator in various sectors of industry, but as the mother of a young child herself she has discovered “a real interest in children’s education”, and wants to offer this linguistic opportunity to young children who live in an area she has come to know and love.
“I believe that learning another language can be so beneficial for young children” said June. “It really widens their social boundaries. I’m hoping that by learning another language they will get a taste of a different culture, and in so doing enrich their travel experiences and their lives”.
Speaking on behalf of Foundry House Councillor Gareth Jones said “I am delighted to be able to host this new initiative. That’s what this centre is all about. We’re very happy to help any other such ventures. I wish her well”
The introductory session for 5-11 year olds will start on Monday January 14th between 15.30 and 16.30 at the Foundry House Pembroke and will be held weekly (except holidays and Bank Holidays). Parental supervision is essential and each session will cost a £2. June say no booking is required but it would prove helpful if children brought their own pen and paper, although this is not essential.
