The new art exhibition ‘Drawn From The Edge’ by Mick Armson is being officially opened at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery tomorrow (Saturday).

Over the last thirty years Mick has explored the “seemingly endless visual wonder” of the Pembrokeshire Coast through drawing, painting and printmaking

His studio is situated on the south bank of The River Thames in Greenwich, next to The Thames Barrier. This riverside location also provides constant inspiration for his work.

As a result, he has had a long held ambition to exhibit a body of work at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery that brings together his work inspired by both of these locations, and beyond.

‘Drawn From The Edge’ includes drawings, paintings and original prints, inspired by land meeting water.

This ranges from the natural landscape where bodies of water sculpt the land, relatively unaffected by direct human touch – to cityscapes, harbours and coastal development where the existence of sea, river or lake has been the prime reason for shores and banks to be utilised for human settlement, trade and industry.

Mick’s drawings and paintings are all made on location. He shows these alongside his lino prints, etchings and monotypes, “as they all inform each other”.

“In the landscape, having decided on composition, I initially work quite quickly and spontaneously with broad areas of colour,” he said.

“I then work on top of that with ink or pencil, followed by more concentrated colour work and further linear work and so on. So the image builds up in layers of refinement, which relates closely to the process of printmaking”.

Mick has consistently used printmaking to further develop the work he has done outside.

“I love the methodical process in producing original prints, which still allows for spontaneity and the opportunity to embrace the unexpected,” he continued.

His Lino Print ‘RNLI Tenby’ has been in the permanent collection of Tenby Museum & Art Gallery since 2010, when Mick ran the London Marathon for the RNLI - his limited edition print raising £3700 in sponsorship.

‘Drawn From The Edge’ is an opportunity to enjoy much more of his work and includes many images of the Pembrokeshire coastline, Tenby Harbour and Caldey Island.

It also includes sketchbooks, artefacts and ephemera providing an insight into Mick Armson’s process of seeing, drawing, painting and printmaking.
