Mary and Wyndham Scourfield, of Henfaes, Coxhill, Narberth, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on New Year's Day.

When Wyndham met Mary, he was in the Army stationed in York. He was a local boy brought up in Templeton, and attended both local schools.

Mary Gwendoline Davies, also a local girl, was a nanny for Dr. Lewis, of Narberth, who was at the time looking after the doctor's three children.

On their marriage in 1949, Wyndham had been running his own plumbing and heating engineering business in Narberth, since leaving the Army in 1947.

During their life together they have brought up three boys: Wyn and his wife Sylvie, now working and living in France, with his own family, Gary and his wife Kay, who reside in Narberth, and Nigel and his wife Helen, who live in Johnston, together with all grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

With the Water Board now updating Narberth's water system, it has reminded Wyndham of a time many years ago, when Narberth's water supply during the summer was nil, and he remembers together with his son Nigel, seven-years-old at the time, during the summer months, pumping water from the river into the reservoir to supply Narberth homes and business.

At the time, Wyndham was a member of the Urban District Council.

And Wyndam says - tongue in cheek - he is still waiting for payment for supplying water to Narberth during those summer months many years ago!

Over the years, Mary dedicated herself to the running of a successful guesthouse, and met many interesting people and even pop groups who used to perform at the Queen's Hall, Narberth. She has been a member of Narberth WI for many years, and is also a member of the Sisterhood of Narberth Baptist Church.

Wyndham was for 38 years part of the Army and Pembrokeshire Fire Service, then Dyfed Fire Brigade. He attended fires all over Pembrokeshire and Swansea, and also attended the Aberfan disaster.

As part of his work with the brigade, Wyndham was commended for his services to the community many times. He also received the brigade's long service medal and the Queen's jubilee 1977 medal.
