A 99-year-old Veteran from Saundersfoot was among those gathered at the Rhos Village Hall to commemorate the VJ-Day 80th anniversary and welcome two special guests!

Wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill - alias local resident Richard Johns - and his wife, Carol, as Mrs Clementine Churchill, were chief guests at the event with over 50 people enjoying wartime fayre and music. The ‘Prime Minister’ was transported to the Hall in a superbly restored 1944-era Jeep driven by Richard Cole.

Joining the Rhos community gathering was 99-year-old Veteran Duncan Hilling of Saundersfoot, former Head Gardener at Picton Castle. On VJ-Day in 1945 Duncan was serving with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in India and within weeks he was among the first British occupying forces sent to Japan. With Duncan were his daughter, Katrina, and son-in-law Graham Pearn.

The evening was organised by The Rhos and District Association (TRADA) and in his welcome TRADA Chairman Paul Richardson reminded those present of the significance of the anniversary and invited everyone to stand for a minute’s silence.

All enjoyed the pie, mash and peas supper as well as the wonderful guitar music and vocals provided by local duo Geoff and Dave. Thanks were extended to them, to Richard Cole for the Jeep transport and to the organising and catering teams for another very successful community event.
