The official 12th annual Carten100 took place last Saturday, with 2,500 riders pedalling their way with a favourable easterly wind from Cardiff.

The 108-mile route is mostly flat for the first 60 miles, with all the hills demanding you to dig deep from Carmarthen onwards.

Although it is a ride, not a race, the first participants rolled into Tenby at 1.20 pm, with the merry throng following on from 3 pm.

With Tudor Square closed to traffic, the party started once through the finishers’ arch. The packed Square, full of families and supporters, was only the first stop as the riders made their way to the harbour, where the Tenby and District Lions had laid on a huge marquee filled to the gunwales with beer and food.

The Carten100 riders have helped to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds over the years; however, this year is set to be the biggest yet.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is nominated as this year’s chosen charity.

The organisers, crew and riders of Carten100 are aiming to fundraise over £150,000 with the help of Sofasofa, the Welsh-based furniture company, and Resolveit, a conflict management foundation set up by the former owners of Admiral Insurance.

Both are match-funding every pound raised by the riders with a pound to a maximum of £50,000 each.

The Carten100 is definitely one of the highlights of the Tenby calendar each year as the riders, friends and family wander the bars and restaurants well into Saturday night.

Ten-year-old Saffron takes on the challenge!

Ten-year-old Saffron Owen, a pupil at Hafan Y Môr in Tenby, completed the 107 miles from Cardiff to Tenby on her bright orange bike with ‘Frankie the frog’ on board alongside her mother (who did keep up!) Shirley. The regular training uphill on to the Ridgeway paid dividends.

Saffron thoroughly enjoyed the experience, particularly the camaraderie and encouragement from the other riders.

Saffron thoroughly enjoys cycling and is a member of Towy Riders and Tenby’s Just Tri.

She is now looking forward to racing a Duathlon in Llanelli next week and racing against her good friend Ffion and hopes to spend most of the summer cycling around Scotland ,wild camping before racing the 11 venues in next season’s ‘Cycle cross’ series.

Saffron would like to thank Tenby Just Tri, Towy Riders and her mum for their support and encouragement, and all the sponsors for their best wishes and congratulations in helping her reach her £250 sponsorship target for JDRF (Junior Diabetes Research Foundation)
