It has been a busy year for members of 3rd Tenby Brownies - the last Brownie unit in Tenby (writes Sarah Greener).

Last Summer the unit said goodbye to longstanding leader, Kay Dagger, also known as Snowy Owl, and welcomed a team of new leaders: Sarah, Eleanor, Rebecca, Lydia and later in the year Lois. The leaders are all enthusiastic volunteers who are dedicated to keep the strong Guiding tradition of Tenby alive.

The Brownies have had a busy year having fun and learning about the world around them. The girls have completed a range of fun activities such as making slime, designing a new Brownie uniform, playing lots of games, making masks, toasting marshmallows to make smores and making rooms in boxes. Thank you to CKs and Classic Carpets for the generous donations of materials to make this activity possible.

We are lucky enough that during the summer months we are able to explore our local area and girls in the past have enjoyed going to the beach, the park and having teddy bear picnics. The Brownies even joined other units from around Pembrokeshire on a trip to the Torch Theatre to see Frozen 2. We have also held a fundraising bingo to raise funds for the unit.

The Brownies would like to thank the following local businesses for donating prizes to help make this event a success: Boots (Tenby), Co-op (Tenby), Heatherton, Lollies, Sainsbury’s (Tenby) and Tesco (Tenby). Thank you to everyone who came along to support this event.

In March, 3rd Tenby Brownies received a grant from British Science Association to host a Women in Science event. There were stations set up around the room which the girls worked around exploring different areas of science. Each station had a different female scientist on it to inspire the girls and broaden their horizons. This also helped to show the girls that science is for everyone and not just for men.

Our first station was Katja and Pia on behalf of Valero. They showed the girls a volcano demonstration and helped them make Lava Lamps to take home. Our second station was Jenny, a local IT teacher with Learning Pembrokeshire, who helped the girls to create a stop motion animation using an iPad and Lego figures. We also had Lydia, a nurse and a Brownie leader, showing the girls handwashing and conducting health checks on the girls’ teddy bears.

Our fourth station was Lisa Day Sports Massage who showed the girls anatomy books and talked about sport science and keeping fit and healthy. She even brought along some of her exercise equipment which the Brownies loved trying out. Our final station was Jill, a local chemistry teacher, who conducted experiments involving red cabbage indicator.

The event would not have been complete without a fabulous woman in science themed cake from Lisa, of Willow Bakery.

The girls then had science themed bags to take home which included science kits, science books, stationary and sunflowers for them to grow. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event a success.

Lockdown has brought new challenges to the unit and we have been unable to hold our usual meetings. However, thanks to the hard work of the leaders we moved our meetings online where the fun continues. We have again completed lots of fun activities including: a pet show, a scavenger hunt, planning our ideal music festival, making a happiness jar, learning some relaxation techniques and making a hedgehog house.

Brownies is great fun for girls aged 7-10. We have spaces at 3rd Tenby Brownies, so if you know of any girls aged 7-10 who would like to join the fun, then please ask their parents or guardians to register them on the GirlGuiding website. You can also find more information about Brownies there.

We are really excited about starting up again in September and we are looking forward to the year ahead.
