If you see a nine-year-old girl carrying a bucket on her head in Narberth, then ‘water’ good idea it will be to give a wave to Betsy who is training for a charity walk later this month.
Betsy Harding Hole will be covering four miles around the town in support of WaterAid.
And her yellow bucket will contain four litres of water - similar to the amount that children as young as two-years-old in poor international communities have to carry daily to ensure their families have a water supply.
The task of collecting water dominates the lives of many children - usually girls, who frequently have no time to go to school, and many suffer damage to their heads, necks and spine because of the weight of the containers they carry.
WaterAid works in 27 countries for clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene and Betsy decided to raise money for the charity after her mum, Donna Harding, asked her to ‘hurry up and stop wasting water’ when she was in the shower.
“Betsy asked about the WaterAid adverts on the tv and was quite concerned about young girls carrying water over long distances, and that these children’s didn’t get to school.
“So Betsy decided to do a water walk in the hope that she could raise money money and perphaps help girls her age in other countries to get an education and also clean water.”
Betsy’s Big Water Carry for WaterAid will start at Narberth Food Festival on Sunday September 23 at 11 am.
The festival will fill up her eight half-litre bottles, and she will then walk four miles around Narberth, carrying her water bucket on her head.
“Betsy’s getting into training for the water walk and has started by carrying one litre of water for a mile,” said Donna.
“She’s had a really good response already, and is over half-way to her original target of £200.”
