Firefighters from Tenby were quick on the scene after a fire broke out at a hotel in Penally on Saturday morning.

Tenby’s firefighters were joined by crews from Pembroke Dock, Narberth and Milford Haven in attending a fire at Penally Abbey Country Hotel shortly before 10 am.

The fire was located on the first floor, of the three-storey building, and had spread to the roof space of the hotel.

Crews were involved in fighting the fire and preventing its spread, using sixteen breathing apparatus, eight thermal imaging cameras, two hose reel jets, 70mm hose, 45mm hose, two 10.5-meter ladders, a short extension ladder, ceiling hooks and small gear.

All persons were accounted for, and the Fire crews left the incident at 3.10 pm.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Service.

Shortly after midday on Saturday the Penally Abbey Country Hotel and Restaurant stated: “No one was hurt and everyone is okay. We are yet to know the cause.”

Following the incident, county councillor for the Penally ward, Clr. Jon Preston said that he was ‘shocked and saddened’ to hear news of the fire, but was glad that no one was hurt.

“I know how much work Lucas and Melanie have put into Penally Abbey and the plans they were making for its future. We as a community are proud of the Abbey and I think I speak for everyone when I say that we look forward to seeing the Abbey restored and open for business as soon as is practically possible,” he said.

“I know that there will be much work to do but I’m sure with the couple’s continued ambition and creativity, this terrible event will eventually become another chapter in the rich history of Penally Abbey,” added Clr. Preston.The following day Tenby’s fire crew were also tasked with a call-out to the Hean Castle Estate in Saundersfoot to tend to a grass fire in woodlands shortly before 11.30 amApproximately 100 square meters of grass and trees were alight. Firefighters extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet and left the incident at 1.05 pm. The cause of the fire was accidental.The Hean Estate thanked firefighters for attending ‘promptly’ and warned people to please be very careful when outdoors at the moment, also reminding children of the risks of lighting fires as the ground is so dry.
