A Milford motorist caught driving with a quantity of cannabis in her system, used the drug to stop her from having nightmares a court has heard.

Twenty-nine-year-old Amy Hughes, of Richard John Road, Llandgwm, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday (March 3), to admit the offence.

Prosecutor Dennis Davies told the court that police carried out a routine stop check on Miss Hughes who was driving a Skoda Fabia on Thornton Road, Steynton, shortly before 5 pm on September 25, with a road swipe test proving positive

Defence solicitor John Allchurch told the court that Miss Hughes was a single mum with a six-year-old child and some times smoked cannabis as it helped prevent her from having nightmares.

He said that back in 2018 an assault on the defendant and a friend by two men had a profound effect on her.

“She has been unable to go to work since, and has a number of issues with anxiety, depression and PTSD.

“Occasionally she smokes cannabis to get her through the night, to stop her having nightmares, in her words. Miss Hughes did not appreciate that the drugs would still be in her system,” added Mr. Allchurch.

Magistrates handed the defendant a 12 month driving disqualification and fined her £120.

She was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £32 victim surcharge.
