A Happy Easter to all members. The sailing season continued at the weekend with the latest dinghy race starting on a bleak Easter Sunday which might have deterred a few, maybe others were otherwise employed or engaged in Easter egg hunts (I’m still waiting for mine), but still nine brave souls ventured out on a fresh and blustery morning.
This week’s racing was run by Keith and Paul, with Tom in one safety and Terry and Lloyd in the second boat around a port hand course. The start was competitive, although Mark in his Aero appeared to be still on Midlands time which must be at least a few minutes behind Pembrokeshire.
A smaller course this week allowed some of the faster boats to do four laps and the overall positions were fiercely fought over resulting in another win for Simon ahead of James with last year’s champion Maurice improving this week to take third place overall just ahead of Mark who caught up fast after a leisurely start.
The two Lasers of Hywel and Rosie had a right old battle over three laps being no more than 30 seconds apart at any time, Hywel just held on at the finish to take the honours this week, while behind them Harry and Steve finished just ahead of Jacob who battled round bravely in his Topper and then enjoyed a trip in Keith’s new boat, while Paul tried out the Topper as an option for heavy weather days.
While the dinghy sailors were enjoying themselves afloat back on dry land, Martin led a small band of volunteers, Frank, Julia, Julie and Keith in selling raffle tickets in aid of club funds and with the benefit of the excellent prizes offered by St. Brides Spa Hotel and the Marina Restaurant as described last week. Another session is planned soon, with the rowers set to take their turn and hopefully other sections of the club will follow suit.
Meanwhile on the harbour, the Cruisers are making their preparations to get in the water and join those already in, some of whom have actually been out to sea and hopefully they will advise us of their daring voyages in these reports.
Back on shore, we are much indebted to the regular Wednesday gang of workers who continue to keep the boats running and the dinghy park tidy so that we can enjoy ourselves at weekend, so if anyone is around on Wednesday mornings, please come along and lend a hand. There is always coffee and usually biscuits for all who help out.
Good luck to Hywel on his impending instructor’s course, we are sure you will be fine.
This weekend, we have two races at the much more civilised start time of 1500, Keith is again in charge aided by Maurice this time and accompanied by a full safety crew, hopefully the warmer weather will return and hope to see lots of you out there.
