Tenby GC beat Glynhir B in the opening match of the season albeit the victory was perhaps not convincing.

Following a wet winter, the famous links course at Tenby is improving. The greens in particular are excellent in view of the time of year.

Tenby’s top pair of Richard Morton and Darren Thomas were all-square after six holes against Glynhir’s Deian Owen and Andrew Richards. However, they then lost the next six holes on the bounce and were consequently hammered six and five.

Jon Bolter and Neil Thomas made amends with a convincing five and four victory over Greg Jones and Ian Roderick. The game between Andrew Cope plus Lewis Hurlow and Ray Davies plus Emrys Wilcox was closer, with the Tenby pair grinding out a two-up win.

Matters were not looking good when Tenby’s next two pairings both lost.

The Chris’ Hughes and Beecher, were never in contention against Gordon Elliott and Robbie Roberts and lost three and two. Rob Willcox and Los Phillips had a great tussle with Mark Martin and Mel Leech, but lost one down on the final green.

Viv John and Gary McNeilly were far too steady for Richard Evans and Gethin Harries and came out on top by five and four. Roger Schooling and Terry Davies were three up after three holes when Glynhir’s secretary Rob Edwards, who was partnered by his son Llyr, had to concede the game.

The biggest win of the day was by Tenby’s Martin Morris and Dai Cope, who were in fine form. They beat Glynhir’s Richard Thomas and Martin Toms by eight and six.

In the final game, Ian Thomas and Mark Griffiths were always up against Dave Harry and Dewi Williams, before winning three and two.

Thus, Tenby opened their 2016 campaign with a victory by six matches to three. The next two matches will be very tough encounters being away at Ashburnham and Cardigan.

In the meantime, Tenby will be playing in the preliminary round of the Jeff Harries Bowl at Milford Haven this (Friday) evening.
