October has arrived with some windy weather, but on Monday 2nd this didn’t deter the Senior Ladies venturing onto the course to play their 14-hole competition. Outright winner on the day was Rita Collins with 24 points, with Liz Storey beating Anna Hubbard on countback for second place with 20 points.
Thursday 5th was the qualifying competition for the Daily Mail Foursomes. This is a pairs battle and one of the harder formats because both players have to be ‘on-song’. Best duo ‘in tune’ on the day and clear winners were Bev Owen and Irene Gilman with 35 points. Runners-up were Pat Fox and Pam Cole on 32 with third place going to Rebecca Naden and Helen Hughes on 30 points.
The winning pair go forward to the 2018 knockout competition to represent Tenby. Well done girls and good luck next year.
The Sunday GUW Medal was held on the 8th, with five taking part. Georgina Ormond was third with a nett 78, Heather Morgan was second with a nett 75, but Fair Ball came in with an excellent nett 69 (on a par 75) to win the Medal and reduce her handicap from 19 to 17. Very well played Fair!
On Monday, the Senior Ladies had their usual roll-up. The four players decided on a match-play format, with Isobel Lawrence (back from a two-month sailing jaunt around the Greek Islands) helping Liz Storey to out-play Dinah Reed and Pat Fox. Well done Lizzie and Issie.
Also on Monday, a dozen Tenby Ladies piled into a minibus at 9 am, enjoying some welcome refreshments kindly prepared by Anna Hubbard, and headed off to Newport Sands for the Autumn Away Day.
This has been a long-established event in the memory of Mrs. Audrey Birt, who was Tenby lady captain in 1967. Audrey took the ladies on her first outing to Newport and present captain Linda Thomas thought it would be fitting to return there this year.
Audrey’s son Giles generously provides lovely pieces of china-ware for prizes in memory of his late mother, which is very much appreciated by the Tenby Ladies Section.
When the ladies arrived at the course, they enjoyed bacon rolls and plenty of coffee, before the draw for partners took place. Once done, they teed-off in glorious sunshine, with a gentle breeze. They enjoyed a post-golf two-course meal (washed down with the odd glass (or two!) of wine.
Heather Morgan won the top prize with 31 points - beating Helen Hughes on a better back nine. Vicky Burks was third on countback on the back three from Penny Cope, with 30 points. Helen was the only player to get a two.
On the return journey, they finished the refreshments they had started at the beginning of the day. Who knew that Anna was such a good mixologist? A great day was had by all. A perfect end to a perfect day!
