As Summer fades, Autumn causes the nights to draw in and Winter looms ahead, there is a transition in the Seniors section. The action moves from home and away matches against Seniors from other clubs to a more parochial programme, consisting of an Eclectic competition lasting until Spring, together with a sprinkling of other tournaments.
The annual general meeting - this year’s being the 28th - signals this change of routine, marks the election of a new committee and is the day when the income from a season’s charity raffles is donated to selected local charities. Oh yes - the AGM is also preceded by a 15-hole Stableford competition and an informal lunch - Tuesday, September 27, was quite a busy day!
Thirty-two Seniors played in the competition, not bad considering the fairly wet and windy weather. Jim Martin notched up 27 points to claim third place and a generous prize, while Robin Hagley managed one point more to secure second place and much gold. The winner, with an enviable 29 points, earning a massive reward, was a senior Senior - Ron Murphy.
As the players finished their lunch, we welcomed the recipients of this year’s charity donations; Shirley Kirkham from Ty Hafan, Pauline Davies from Pembrokeshire Macmillan Nurses and Charles Clewett from the Paul Sartori Foundation. Captain Peter presented cheques totalling £800 to these deserving charities, and each of the recipients thanked the section and gave a brief outline of their aims and achievements, made possible by donations such as those raised by the Seniors.
The photograph shows the three hard working fund-raisers with their cheques.
Next - and not actually part of the day’s programme - Captain Peter revealed that Jeff Banfield, a Senior golfer of some renown, had become a grandfather while out on the course! Jeff was applauded and congratulated by the assembly, and sadly explained that his religion prevented him from buying everybody a drink to wet the baby’s head. These devout Misers eh?
Then it was down to the business of the AGM - nothing at all contentious, but the captain made reference to the success of the Seniors teams who excelled this year by winning the Centenary Challenge Cup and the Pembrokeshire Invitational Shield.
The election of the 2016-2017 committee was the next item of business, and the incumbents are: Captain -Dudley Williams; vice-captain - Idwal David; secretary - Derek Cole; treasurer - Stan Hudson.
Let us hope that they all have a pleasant and rewarding year, on the group photograph they can be identified by the slightly apprehensive look on their faces.
This would normally have been the end of the day’s business, but past captain Peter informed the Seniors that a much missed and long time member of the Seniors, John Cook, who died in March this year - had generously bequeathed £1,000 to the Seniors in his will. What a thoughtful and considerate gesture, and quite typical of the man - thank you John.
