It was definitely the shot of the hole. It had to be the shot of the match. It was no doubt the stroke of the day. Some may say it could be the hit of the week - nay the month. Never mind Luis Fonsi, David Guetta or DJ Khaled - there are those who will suggest that it could be the ‘Hit of the Summer’. If there was a vote for the ‘Best Stroke of the Year’ it may well be the clear winner.
If he had been playing in a stableford competition it would have scored him six points. Yes, that’s right - six points! A ‘condor’ is four under par, so it’s better than an eagle and an albatross. It was a 4 hybrid. It was a distance of 206 yards from the right edge of the seventh fairway. It flew straight and true through the air like an arrow, avoiding the waiting bunkers to the left and right and honing in on the green. It saw its intended destination and scuttled through the apron onto the green and then climbed the rise and finally took the plunge into the hole.
They weren’t exactly sure - it’s a long way to see after all - but when they looked in the hole for the ball, that’s where it was. Yes - a two on the par four seventh hole. A gross eagle - 398 yards in two shots. The drive wasn’t too shabby, but the second shot will be talked about until all the cows come home from wherever they are. ’
‘Who is the striker of this fine shot?’ I hear you all ask. Take a bow - Adrian Palmer. Adrian and his partner Peter won that hole - unsurprisingly - and they went on to take their match 3 and 2. But all the talk in the clubhouse was about the one in the seventh match who had a two on the seventh. And he even had the cheek to do it whilst playing against the South Pembs Rabbits captain! Well done, young man.
Warren Hacker, our links reporter, had been interrogating the Tenby pairs as they came in for any noteworthy events in their matches and, in all honesty, they paled into insignificance after Adrian’s effort, but they will get a small mention.
Captain Martin had decided to take a watching brief this week, so leading the way were treasurer Mark and Paul D - making his first outing of the summer. They had a good tussle, but Mark’s new heavier putter had its moments and they came out on top one up.
Out second and making his second summer appearance was unbeaten David B, alongside Kieron. Pars were the order of the day and the home pair managed a few more and were victorious by 3 and 2.
Next off were Wyndham and Steve C. After an indifferent start - and a birdie with a shot for Mike on the third - the Tenby boys gelled, drew level on the 11th, then won four of the next five to take the game 3 and 2.
Following behind were Ian and Chris against a pair of Richards. The Tenby pair ‘dicktated’ the game and took an early lead and despite a rally (and sore feet!) they held on for a 3 and 1 victory.
Fifth off were the unbeaten Grant alongside Steve W - fresh from his ‘almost’ efforts in the 36-hole Regimental Bowl the day before. They were down going over the line, but finished strongly to come out on top two up.
Next on the tee were big-hitting John B and his partner John S, looking for his first summer point. It was the Johns who had the smiles on their faces as they shook hands on the 16th green after a 4 and 2 triumph.
The seventh match has been spoken about, so we’ll jump to the eighth paring - vice-captain Paul C with Robin - who was giving shots this week for a change. It was another close game, with the homesters prevailing by 3 and 1.
Seven Tenby Rabbits are in double figures in the Mick Gillet Trophy for Summer League points - Chris has 10 points, Mark, Kieron and Phil sit on 11, Adrian is on 12, with Steve W on 18 and still-unbeaten Grant ahead with 22.
So, despite this being a short-notice re-arranged match, it was pleasing to see eight closely contested battles (all matches went to at least the 16th!) - with a ‘local derby’ element thrown into the mix- and the Rabbits camaraderie, friendships and banter were the true winners.
Unfortunately for the visiting South Pembs, the scoresheet shows the result was 8-0 in favour of Tenby. The visitors will be keen to reverse the result when they host the return fixture next year.
The win (and the award of a win at Ash after a rules infraction) moves Tenby up to eighth in the 13-team league, but they have games in hand over teams above them, and they have three home games in the next three weeks, so they will hope to continue the upward movement. Fingers crossed. Follow the league scores on ‘threecountiesrabbits.wordpress.com’
