Saturday was the annual needle match between the Tigers (up to 13 handicap) and Rabbits (over 13) sections, with each team fielding 10 players. The format was a mini-Ryder Cup, devised so that each player had to negotiate six holes of fourball better ball, six holes foursomes, and six holes in singles matchplay. The pairs were selected by draw, and battle commenced from the first tee.
Match 1 was Jimmy Wallace and Wayne Brunton (Tigers) v Charles Stephens and Colin Kaijaks (Rabbits). The match result was Tigers 1.5 pts, Rabbits 2.5.
Match 2: Gary Hughes and Joe Buckle (T) v John Parsons and Mike Watkins (R), with a tied result, two points each.
Match 3: Club captain Paul Grimwood and Chris Veale (T) beat Mike Swain and Keith Thompson (R) 3.5 to .5.
Match 4: Rob Hayward and Simon Bourne (T) lost to Steve Vale and Terry Watkins 1.5 to 2.5.
The final match saw Mickey Barratt and Robbie O’Rourke (T) draw with David Williams and Dave Geard, two points each.
The overall result saw the Tigers winning by the smallest difference of one point, 10.5 to 9.5, although if Mike Swain’s putt on the 18th had dropped, it would have been a draw!
