For their August meet, 25 members of Kilgetty Golf Society (great turnout) set out in good spirits for Newport Sands’ attractively sited and challenging golf course; our optimism was rewarded with the most splendid weather.
On a gloriously sunny and warm day under the bluest of skies and with a welcome light cooling breeze, first off (and setting a good target for the team prize of 92 Stableford points for those behind them) were Kelvin Curtains Boughey, Wynne Andy Capp Richards and Peter Peroni Hughes.
Curtains’ modest 22 points in the end realistically scotched any team prize ambitions, but did not deter Andy Capp whose two under for his round had him leader back in the clubhouse from early days, on 38 points (with two blobs!), which no one could get near to - our clear winner, well done.
Following on, Rob The Builder Nixon, Steve Gizmo Jones and John Silver Hair Hughes carded betwixt and between rounds, with Silver Hair’s two on the fifth the highlight.
Next, John Pashmina Perrott, Tom Tiger Woods and Keith Director Leverton carded distinctly underwhelming rounds; fortunately for them there was no wooden spoon team prize, but Tiger, off his game like his less well known namesake, grabbed the individual wooden spoon trophy.
The next two three balls out, Dave Boy Green, John Magneto Richards and John Spindles Hargrave, followed by Wyn Nomad Hopkins, Roger Analyst Handcock and Bob Dixie Forrest (grabbing the nearest the pin prize on the 16th) just failed to pass the first group’s team score, though Magneto came in second overall, helped by a two at the 16th.
Immediately behind, spurred on no doubt by the efforts of those ahead of them, Barry Nippy Neale, Anthony Wiseguy Ryan and Andy Popeye Bevans cleaned up the team prize by eight points (an impressive total 100 points), Nippy taking third place overall and Wiseguy topping the efforts of those of us with high (20+) handicaps.
The last two groups, Roger Doombar Woodward, Simon The Swan Davies and Mike Big Box Allen, followed by the four ball of Martin FCUK Davies, Neil Junior Davies, Paul Goodvalue Marsden and John Flutter Williams soldiered enjoyably on behind, most notably with Junior striking the longest drive at the 17th.
A great day. Our chair Gizmo announced the introduction of a KGS Green Jacket (kindly sponsored by Doombar, many thanks to him) to adorn each month’s winner (doesn’t Andy Capp look splendid in it?): he went on to say that our next meeting, on Wednesday, September 9, was at Derllys Court Golf Club, Bancyfelin, near Carmarthen, 10.30 tee-off.
At this point, Nomad expressed concern that the date coincided with his wedding anniversary, but (perhaps ill-advisedly) hoped his dear wife would kindly drive him to and from the course so that he could have a good celebratory drink! Be that as it may, see our web site (http://kilgettygolf.co.uk) for details of how to sign up to take part.
