It was another weekend of misery for Pembrokeshire’s footballers as yet again a host of games were postponed due to the adverse weather conditions. Very few games started as the county was again bombarded by rain in the days preceding the weekend’s fixtures.
The frustration of many footballers was summed up in one tweet by Lawrenny football club that read:‘The weather has won yet again today, that means from a total of 12 games over the last six weeks for both sides, we have managed to play just one’.
This means of course that those missing 11 games will have to be played before the season is out, which usually means a host of midweek matches at the end of the season when the light allows for evening games to be played.
It’s not an ideal situation of course and Pembrokeshire clubs have been here before. Only two years ago, Merlins Bridge barely kicked a ball in anger for two months such was the persistent nature of the weather.
Some games were able to go ahead, though, and Carew had another difficult day as they lost 2-0 at home to Goodwick United, while in division two, Hundleton beat Fishguard Sports 3-1 after goals from brothers Dylan and Rhodri Davies, the latter finishing with a brace.
In division three, Hakin United seconds beat Cosheston Cougars 9-1, the only bright spot for the visitors being Wayne Boswell’s strike, while Manorbier United beat Johnston seconds 3-2 at home after goals from Ben Hall, Mike Brown and Mike Ryder.
Narberth seconds had a good win at Milford United seconds, winning 2-0, while Pennar Robins’ seconds drew 3-3 with Angle seconds as Jamie Morgan scored twice and Steve James once for the Robins and Nick Willis, Luke Wickland and Nick Willis for the home team.
There were no games for Narberth firsts and thirds, Kilgetty firsts and seconds and St. Clears’ firsts, however in the second round of the division five cup, Lamphey seconds beat Milford United seconds 2-0 after goals from Jamie Aries and Anthony Webb, while Pendine seconds narrowly lost 5-3 at Pembroke Boro seconds. Richard Evans, Rhys Allison, Adam Barlow and a brace by Jason Evans ensured a win for the Boro, while Kevin Morse, Callum Fuddamle and Chris Evans all scored for the Gulls.
