The first round of the Pembrokeshire Senior Cup got underway on Saturday with few, if any shocks for the big boys as they faced some potential banana skins.
Kilgetty travelled to Hundleton and got given a lesson by the hosts as they eased to a 6-0 win after Dylan Davies led the way with a well-taken hat-trick. Luke Phillips, Aaron Goldsmith and Geraint Lewis were the others to score.
St. Clears, meanwhile, went down to in-form Johnston, losing 4-3, with Steve Thomas scoring for the away team.
It was a better afternoon for Pendine, however, despite having to go to Letterston, as they won 3-1, with goals coming from Trev, Spud and Justin Blewitt.
Angle showed St. Ishmaels just how much they have improved since they were last n the same division together by securing a 6-2 win. Ben Adams stole the show with a well-taken brace, while Jake Seaton, Chris Richards, Scott Richards and Nick Willis were the other men to score.
Not such good news for Carew, however, as their difficulties continued with a 4-1 loss at home to Merlins Bridge. Scott Fearney scored for the hosts, who were overwhelmed by the visitors.
Jamie Groves scored for Pennar Robins, but they bombed out at the expense of Goodwick United, who won 3-1, while Cosheston Cougars gave a good account of themselves at Herbrandston, despite going down 5-3.
Lamphey may well be leading the way in division two, but they were given a stark reminder of the differences between being top of the tree in the second division and top of the tree in the first after losing 6-2 at home to Hakin United. Rhys Griffiths and Ben Phillips both scored for the hosts, but that proved the only highlight in a disappointing afternoon.
Good news for Saundersfoot Sports, though, as they eased through into the second round thanks to a 4-2 win at home over Solva. Sam Coleman, Richard Cope, Jack Franklyn and Jack Tucker all scored for the home team.
A fine result for Tenby, too, as they beat Pembroke Boro 9-0. Joe Leahy scored four, Jerome Mansbrioge two, while Sam Christopher and Jordan Richards bagged one each. The other was an own goal by the battered visitors.
It wasn’t all senior cup action, however, with teams in the lower divisions playing their league fixtures, although perhaps Narberth seconds would have wished for a cup encounter against Pennar Robins’ seconds as they lost 2-0, meaning they wouldn’t have given away three points. Phil Thompson scored both for the victors.
Carew seconds lost 1-0 at Hakin United seconds, while Manorbier United produced their best performance of the season in beating Hubberston 9-1.
Johnny Harries and Carl Gwyther both scored for Saundersfoot Sports’ seconds, yet they couldn’t prevent their team from going down 4-2 away at Milford United seconds, while Carew thirds lost 4-1 at home to Milford Athletic seconds, despite Nick Davies’s fine strike for the hosts.
Biggest win of the day went to Pennar Robins’ thirds who beat Letterston seconds 13-1. Michael Groves fell one short of completing a double hat-trick, with Chris Asparassa hitting four. The others came from Craig Butland, George Mcbeth, Aden Cressey and Marco Valentine.
Luke Wickland was on target for Angle seconds and his goal proved the difference between them and Prendergast Villa.
St Florence gained a good result at St. Ishmaels’ seconds winning 4-2. Colin Batley, Jamie Roberts, Adam Roberts and Mike Robins all scored.
Bragging rights went to Cosheston Cougars in their 4-0 win over Lawrenny seconds after a brace by Liam Butland and one each by James Wallace and Morgan Daye.
Defeat, too, for Narberth thirds losing 3-1 at home to Fishguard Sports’ seconds, with Rob Goldsworthy scoring for the home team, while Andrew McCabe scored twice for St. Clears’ seconds in their 3-2 defeat to Neyland reserves.
Chris Morgan scored for Kilgetty seconds in their 2-1 loss at home to Lamphey seconds after Jamie Aries scored twice, while Pendine seconds lost 2-0 to Tenby seconds, who appear to be running away with division five already, despite having played just seven games. Richard Tebbutt and Tom Baker scored for the Seasiders.
Monkton Swifts produced a fine performance to win 4-1 at home against West Dragons, with Liam Finnegan netting a brace and Dan Nolan and Paul Lacey the others, while honours went to Pembroke Boro seconds in their derby clash against Hundleton seconds after they won 4-2. Jason Evans scored three and Rhys Allison one for the hosts, while Hundleton’s goals came from Brandon Sture and Dan Lynch.
Finally, Narberth firsts were in WWFA Tony Nakonecznyj Insurance Brokers Intermediate Cup Round One action and they made it through, winning 4-2 against Brunswick United as Dorian Davies and Jordan Williams both scored twice to seal an easy passage into the next round.
