Credit where it’s due, Narberth’s groundsmen must have put in the hours to get the Jesse Road pitch playable for their home game against Monkton Swifts on Saturday. It’s a ground that has been known to hold water, so to get the game on was a miracle in itself, given the majority of games fell foul of the elements once again.

It’s not been a fluent start to 2018 for our county’s football clubs as rain has continuously fallen to render our grounds waterlogged and last Saturday was no exception, with over 20 games postponed.

Narberth may have hoped theirs was too, given they went down to the Swifts, losing 3-2 in an enthralling game, having come from behind to draw level, only to fall at the final hurdle when they conceded a goal.

Morgan Preece pulled one back for the hosts after the Swifts went 2-0 up following goals by James Russell with Chris Brown drawing the teams level, but a third by Russell ensured they went back with the points.

Theirs was the only first division game to get the nod, while in division two, Hakin United seconds beat Llangwm 4-0, with the game between Saundersfoot Sports and Johnston being abandoned.

It was a sorry end to the game for the Sports, given they were playing on their replacement pitch for the season after Broadfield Caravan Park and BB’s Bar let them use one of their fields after theirs was damaged earlier in the season.

Elsewhere, Solva beat Fishguard Sports 2-1.

In the second round of the third division cup, Manorbier United beat Pennar Robins’ seconds 4-2 on penalties after the game finished 0-0 after extra time, while in division three, a goal by Adam Moore was not enough to help Pendine as they lost 2-1 at Clarbeston Road.

In division four, Angle seconds came out on top 3-1 at Llangwm, while the only game to get the go-ahead in division five was between Johnston seconds and Saundersfoot Sports’ seconds, with the Tigers coming out on top 10-1.

James Lloyd scored the visitors’ only goal.
