This Fairtrade Fortnight the Kilgetty Under 14s took a short break from their regular training to have some fun with a giant Fairtrade football.

The girls, coached by Lukas Gamble, train on Tuesday evenings. They have already significantly developed their skills and are improving every session.

Sharron Hardwick, assistant Kilgetty AFC U14 coach, brought the giant ball to the session. Sharron founded the Fair Trade In Football Campaign and is keen to support local and Sialkot football stitching communities. Fairtrade ensures workers get a better deal, fair wages, safe and fair working conditions. They benefit from the Fairtrade Premiums paid on every Fairtrade ball sold, which are used to buy school equipment, set up a water filtration system, a free eye clinic and more.

The girls said: “It was great fun playing with the giant Fairtrade football, we remember Sharron visiting our schools to talk about Fairtrade and some of us took part in her Fairtrade football tournaments at Tavernspite CP.”

The giant Fairtrade ball is one of only three in existence and was given to the Fair Trade In Football Campaign by Bala Sport, for use in fund and awareness-raising activities.

Kilgetty first team and the Under 14s girls already train with some Fairtrade footballs donated to them via a Hub Cymru Africa grant.

There will be more Fairtrade football played on May 7, when Kilgetty AFC host their football festival on May Day Bank Holiday Monday, at the Kingsmoor Sports Ground, the home of Kilgetty Football Club. This year’s festival is set to the biggest yet, incorporating mini, junior and girls football. The support has been fantastic at previous festivals, and it is expected that around 700 children will play football over the day.
