The popularity of girls’ cricket in Pembrokeshire is continuing to grow - with a record 20 schools fielding teams in this year’s girls Kwik cricket finals.

The popular annual festival was organised by Sport Pembrokeshire - the sports development team at Pembrokeshire County Council.

Due to the amount of teams, the event took place at two separate cricket grounds for the second time, with the South Pembrokeshire schools playing at Cresselly and the North Pembrokeshire teams taking to the crease at Haverfordwest.

Reaching the semi-finals at Cresselly were Tenby Primary School, Pennar Community School, Tavernspite Community Primary School, and Ysgol Hafan y Mor. In two close games, Hafan y Môr beat Tavernspite with both schools undefeated at this stage, and Tenby overcame Pennar.

This set-up a local derby final which saw Hafan y Môr winning the south section for the second year in a row.

The event was sponsored by Valero, whose public affairs manager Stephen Thornton presented the medals to the finalists.

Sport Pembrokeshire cricket development officer Martin Jones said that the standard of cricket throughout all schools was good, with Ysgol Hafan y Môr standing out from the beginning under the capable eye of Jon Thomas from Hendy Gwyn Cricket Club.

The Hafan y Môr team consisted of; Taela, Anais, Fraya (captain), Emily, Maisie, Saffron, Isla, Seren, Freya and Tigerlilly.

In the north of the county, the Haverfordwest festival proved just as competitive, with the majority of games decided by just a handful of runs.

Cleddau Reach Primary School, Fenton Community Primary School, Roch Community School and St. Mark’s Primary School all earned their places in the semi-finals with some superb all-round performances.

An experienced Cleddau Reach side beat Fenton, while Roch put in an an excellent performance to beat St. Mark’s.

There followed a very close final, with the batting of Seren Holliday carrying the day for Roch and overcoming the reigning champions Cleddau Reach.

The winning team from Roch consisted of Seren Holliday (captain), Evie Goddard, Eleanor White, Holly John, Betsy Owen, Leila Egelstaff, Alice Morgan, Nell Sadler, and Ffion Canton.

“Both Roch Community School and Ysgol Hafan y Mor now go on to represent Pembrokeshire in the National Finals held at Sophia Gardens on July 16,” said Martin Jones, cricket officer.

“We all wish them good luck and hope they enjoy the day and experience.”
