There was an air of inevitability about Dan Suttons scoring his first ton of the season against his former club Johnston over the weekend. Firstly, he hasn’t set the world alight this season so was due a score and secondly, the beleaguered visitors to Cresselly posed no serious threat to a man of his talent.
He scored 117 out of the home team’s 240-2 and his opening partner Adam Chandler hit 62 and Iwan Izzard 39 not out. Johnston had no answer to them, being dismissed for 84 as Ryan Lewis and Tom Arthur took three wickets.
Kilgetty were at St Ishmaels and went down by 33 runs after the hosts were dismissed for 167, Anthony Bevan taking four wickets and Ross Hardy three, in reply, Richard Reed scored 30 as the visitors were all out for 134.
Lawrenny were at the Racecourse only to come up against the county’s in-form batsman after Simon Holliday hit yet another century to add to the one he hit on the first game of the season and the 90 he hit in the second.
His innings of 124 together with Lle Summons’ 54 helped Haverfordwest reach 226-5. Only Rob Williams with 4-29 caused any problems.
In reply, Lawrenny were all out for 80, James Phillips’ 47 being the only high point.
Whitland went down to defeat too after a three wicket loss at Llangwm.
Whitland scored 176 all out after Geraint Jones hit 57 and Geraint Phillips and Matthew Davies 35 not out and 30 respectively.
Llangwm reached the total for the loss of seven wickets after Ben Harvey took three wickets.
Sam Franklin was the star of the show for Saundersfoot after his brilliant 110 helped his team reach 256-7 against Pembroke for whom Barry Evans took three wickets.
Franklin was joined by Steve Cook who hit 42 not out and Gareth Edwards who struck 30.
In reply, Tom Mansbridge took three wickets as Pembroke closed on 169-5 after Evans’ 41 and Paul White’s 38 not out.
Narberth’s loss to Carew was their first defeat of the season as they fell an agonising 13 runs short of Carew’s 160-7. Rhys Davies scored 38 and took 3-29 and Tom Davies 36 not out and 3-39 for Carew while Ian Sefton hit 32 and Rob Scourfield took 3-34.
For Narberth, Jordan Howell hit 40 while Ben Quartermaine took 3-27 and Louis Davies 2-27.
Whitland seconds went down to Cresselly seconds who eased to a four wicket win after the Borderers were dismissed for 122 as Sam Harts and Matthew Webb shared six wickets.
Martin Thomas scored 42 for Whitland. In reply Matthew Webb hit 59 not out for the winners.
Bottom team Stackpole suffered a losing draw in all but name given the new rules meant the points went to Haverfordwest seconds who hit 252-9 in their innings. George Smith took five wickets for the Lillies.
Stackpole closed on 185-7 after Josh Davies hit 51.
In division three an excellent innings of 77 by Nic Johnson and 47 from Scott Brunton helped Lamphey to a seven wicket win over Neyland seconds after the Stags chased down the hosts’ 156-6 while Pembroke Dock put up a good show against Carew seconds as they finished on 162-6 in reply to the Rooks’ 190-6.
Scott Richards hit 76 for the hosts and Robbie HIcks 47 and Rob Hearne took 3-18.
In reply, Craig Butland hit an unbeaten 44 and Jake Griffiths 43 after Matthew Phillips and Tudor Hurle took two wickets each.
Lawrenny seconds had a solid four wicket win over Llechryd seconds who scored 169-5 from their allotted overs. Lawrenny then reached 170-6 thanks to Steve Campbell’s 81 and Hugh Griffiths’ 26.
Narberth seconds went down to their first loss of the season after they were skittled for 116 against Herbrandston. Only Davy Johns with 50 came to grips with the Herbie attack and Rob Nicholas who struck 23.
Johns then took 5-26 but his wickets failed to halt Herbie’s march to a three wicket win.
In division four, Chris Hawkes had a fine all-round game for Saundersfoot Seconds in their seven wicket win at Hundleton after the hosts reached 91-8 in thehri overs.
Hawkes took 3-15 and Kevin Sykes 3-17 before the former struck an unbeaten 41 in the successful run chase. For Hundleton, David Lockyer hit 27 not out.
There was no game for Laugharne after Crymych failed to raise a side.
Meanwhile, in division five, Pembroke Dock seconds lost to Cresselly thirds by 14 runs after Cresselly hit 147-8 thanks to Peter Rice’s 64. Ben Callen took 4-38 for the Dock.
Kilgetty seconds were indebted to father and son duo Brian and Liam Cullen for their six wicket win over Haverfordwest fourths who hit 120-7. Brian hit 30 and Liam 36 not out in the run chase with Matthew Lewis also scoring 30.
Ross Grieve’s 47 and Alex Wilkes 35 helped Carew thirds reach 163-5 against Neyland thirds who could only muster 120 all out in reply after Rhys Canton took 4-19 and Rhys Grigg 3-20.
Pembroke seconds beat Whitland thirds by three wickets after Whitland scored 108-5 thanks to Gwynne Phillip’s 41 while Nigel Phillips scored 32 for Pembroke and Adie Phillips 31 not out as they reached 109-7.
Stackpole seconds had a bye.
