Whitland 150-5 and 143-6
beat Haverfordwest 119-8
and 139-10 by 35 runs
Whitland won the first major cricket trophy of the summer after coming out on top in the Duggie Morris Final against Haverfordwest last Sunday.
The Borderers, on the receiving end of a batting onslaught by Haverfordwest the previous Saturday in a league fixture, got their revenge in the best possible way after a superb all round performance, with their key players particularly standing out.
They romped to 150-5 in their first innings, recovering from a tenuous position after finding themselves 80-5 at one stage, yet a partnership of 70 by Matthew Davies and Iestyn Scourfield helped them reach a challenging total.
Geraint Jones hit two 4s in his 34, with Davies hitting four boundaries in his 48 not out and Scourfield three in his 28 not out.
Haverfordwest got off to a good start with Simon Holliday, the chief destroyer in the Town’s league run fest, sharing a first wicket partnership of 22 in just under four overs with Archie Thomas, before the latter departed when Wayne Howells enticed him to give a catch to Jon Thomas.
There followed a flurry of wickets as Howells claimed two more, finishing with 3-20, while Thomas took 3-25 as the Town ended up on 119-8, 31 runs shy of Whitland’s challenging yet reachable total.
Whitland showed no sign of letting up as they sensed a victory and opener Dylan Blain put his foot to the pedal hitting 51 off just 40 balls smashing six 4s and one maximum.
Jon Thomas, who often produces his best cricket in cup finals, hit 26 and Scourfield 28 with two 4s and two 6s
Holliday needed a big score if the Town were going to win, but it didn’t materialise.
Scourfield pinned him plumb in front for just one and Haverfordwest never recovered.
Danny Potter hit seven 4s in his 57, while Archie Thomas hit 18, but Matthew Davies took 3-36 and Scourfield 2-19 as Whitland came out on top to win the Duggie Morris for the first time in their history.
