When Hollywood is looking for its next blockbuster film, maybe the directors should head for Pembrokeshire and meet Tenby Aces.
For the popular triathlon club certainly had all the ingredients for a feelgood movie on Sunday.
The club most certainly lived up to its name when it put on an ‘ace’ show to help Donna Bradley achieve her Ironman Wales dream.
Sadly, Donna, 52, failed to cross the red carpet finish line during the actual Ironman event after horrendous weather and an unfortunate puncture resulted in her narrowly missing the bike cut-off in Saundersfoot by just three minutes.
Although hugely disappointed, Donna said she wouldn’t swap her Ironman day for anything in the world.
“The confrontation of and survival from getting knocked back is a potent builder of bravery,” she said.
“Success doesn’t always mean winning, but getting back up, dusting yourself down and coming back stronger is the golden ticket to a life without limits.”
And Donna certainly showed her mettle on Sunday when she ran the 26.2 marathon course which she had been training for since signing up for the world’s toughest Ironman one-day event.
But little did she know that her Aces teammates had decided they wanted to share in her day and join in too!
Members surprised Donna with her very own feed station, complete with banners and flags. They also wore bibs with her Ironman number and Donna was presented with arm bands for each lap completed, plus a medal when she emotionally finished under an Aces arch on The Esplanade.
With a broad smile, Donna completed the marathon run in five hours 12 minutes and celebrated by popping a bottle of bubbly in true winner’s style.
“My wonderful Aces family finally got me to the finish line,” said Donna afterwards. “I’m sure they could all work for the FBI the way they planned and executed Sunday’s unfinished business marathon event. I thought I was just going to quietly finish my marathon from last week with one or two friends, with mention of maybe a couple more joining in at some point! At no time did I ever expect to turn the corner to find a full blown heroes hour finish line party.
“The Aces quite simply allowed my dream to come true, with an even better finish to my Ironman than I ever could have imagined.
“The Aces give their time and experience so generously to help others and with friendships forged are never happier than when celebrating each other’s success. Theirs is the true spirit of strength and might.
“Our club kit and emblem are instantly recognised on many a course and we wear it with pride. The Ace placed above our hearts really does say it all. Thank you all.”
So whose off to Hollywood with the script? Are there any Ironman events in the Californian home of the Oscars?
