The annual event organised by the Clynderwen Young Farmers Show Committee has been steadily expanding over the past 35 years, but its origins go back much further.
The local Co-op was established in 1911 and was followed by the formation of a YFC in 1929 - the first club of its kind in Wales.
The role of the Agricultural Society was to foster improvement in livestock, crops and horticulture through the medium of exhibition and the YFC’s of this day were primarily required to keep something that lived or grew.
Clynderwen YFC decided on cattle and members were each expected to rear a calf every year which led to the beginnings of a calf show.
In 1930, the show schedule featured a special class for the calf rearing project with some 35 well-reared calves paraded - reportedly ‘a grand sight that attracted enormous attention.’
Various circumstances saw the show go into abeyance in 1963 and it was not re-kindled until 1979 when a calf and horticultural show, sheepdog trials, folk dancing and tug o’ war challenge were held to mark the Golden Jubilee of the YFC at Clynderwen.
Today, the YFC and the show are in very good heart and this year’s event, enjoying excellent weather, was particularly successful with excellent entries in all sections.
Supreme from the horse and pony sections was Kate Canton Davies with her Show Hunter Pony, the five-year-old dark palomino, Ceri Dines Bubbles, smartly ridden by her daughter Olivia, five.
In reserve was Jade Colley parading the overall Hunter champion, the three-year-old dark bay gelding, Cudlip Prince Charming, bred by Lucy Williams.
Challengers under saddle were Sarah Duffy on the seven-year-old bay Working Hunter, My Leabeg, and the first ridden nine-year-old chestnut Barkway Tiara owned by Sara Whitfield, with her daughter, Emily Locke, on board.
Overall winner of the Mountain and Moorland classes was the black Yrallt Mayday Surprise shown by Maggie Simons, the Welsh breeds champion was another black Mike Edwards’ five-year-old mare, Maesygollen Maggie May, shown in hand and the attractive Coloured winner was Waltzing Matilda owned and ridden by Claire Edwards.
A pair of grey Shetlands, Fred, 14, and Charlie, 10, drawing a c. 1890 four wheel dog cart claimed the private driving prize ahead of Patches, a 12-year-old coloured part-bred pony drawing an exercise carriage for novice Ruth Silverstone.
Winners of the dairy section of the calf show were Marc and Caroline Davies with their Holstein in-calf heifer, Sterndale Dorcy Ghost, and the beef cattle parade was led by Ifan Davies with his well-grown Limousin heifer.
Eirlys and Barry Jones continued with hugely successful season taking the sheep championship with their two-year-old Hampshire Down ewe and Ruby Bowie, eight, took best in the dog show with Chico, her long haired Chihuahua.
