A fruity proposal could see someone in Tenby ‘squeezed’ into a juicy role for the town.
The idea of having a town mascot has recently been touted by members of Tenby Chamber of Trade and Tourism, with a ‘Tenby Orange’ discussed similar to La Tomatina in Spain, as a ‘healthy option’.
Oranges were first brought to Tenby in 1566 on board Portuguese ship La Nossa Signora, together with other fruits that had never been brought to the resort before or any other Welsh port.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby Town Council, the town clerk, Andrew Davies, told members that the Chamber of Trade were hoping to canvas the views from other organisations in the town about the proposal.
Clr. Will Rossiter backed the idea and said that he’d very much like to see a visit from a Portuguese ship to launch the proposal, should it be given the go-ahead.
