Loyal local fundraiser Maureen Lower MBE was able to present a donation of £870 to two cancer charities on World Cancer Day following another festive fundraising bake-off.
Maureen, who lived in Berlin for 42 years, and now resides in Kilgetty, has been making and selling real traditional Christmas cakes to aid various charities for 26 years.
Towards the festive period last year, she baked 125 Christmas cakes raising a total of £870 to be split equally between Cancer Research UK and Tenovus.
“I took and sold 46 of the cakes to my regular customers in Berlin, and the rest in Pembrokeshire...I only had one left!” said Maureen, who was able to present a cheque for £435 to Cancer Research UK’s area support manager Caroline Keech, and another £435 to John Hunting of Tenby’s Tenovus fundraising committee, on Monday, February 4, World Cancer Day.
“I would like to thank the following for their assistance - firstly my customers, whom supported my charity, and then the Co-op in Kilgetty, who apart from donating to the cause, also allowed me to sell my homemade cakes from the store one Saturday, along with Jan, Linda, Robin and Heide, where we managed to raise £150 towards ingredients for the cakes,” continued Maureen.
“My thanks also go to Morrisons in Haverfordwest who donated a lost of items; Tesco in Pembroke Dock for £30; also Upton Farm (Pembroke Dock) for 18kg of brown sugar; John from JRJ Frames in Tenby for providing canvas for 125 cake bases; Ben from Rudd Joinery in Pennar for cutting the cake bases; Brenda Roberts from Birmingham for donating £10; and for assisting with cake decorations, thanks goes to Jo Woodgate of Kilgetty and Heide Morritt from Saundersfoot,” she added.
Maureen is now on the look out for some sponsorship to help her fund the charity cake baking (to pay towards the ingredients etc), and anyone who would like to assist is asked to contact her on 07967222939 or via email at [email protected]
