Once again a great start to another event in Whitland to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.
Representatives of several local organisations and many members of the public joined the Carmarthenshire County Council chairman, Mr. Mansel Charles, and his consort, Carmarthenshire County Clr. Mrs. Sue Allen and Pembrokeshire County Clr. Mr. Huw George, to watch Mr. Howard Gibbon open the WWI exhibition.
After a few words of welcome from Mr. Neil Jenkins (chairman of the Whitland Memorial Hall), Mr. Gibbon, who at 96 years of age is Whitland oldest resident, cut the ribbon and declared the exhibition open. Mr. Gibbon also contributed to the exhibition with several photographs and postcards of his family as well as some trench art and other WWI objects.
His is just one of the many contributions to the exhibition by local people. They range from war objects, photographs, postcard collections, family stories, etc. There is a ‘home corne’ with a portable cooker used in 1918 and other household items. Also, a collection of farming items illustrating how agriculture was 100 years ago from the Whitland YFC and a presentation from the Whitland Royal Air Force Cadets on Ira Jones (Ace Pilot from St. Clears) and the start of the RAF on 1918.
Pupils from Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, Ysgol Llys Hywel and Ysgol Tafarnspite created some work specially for the exhibition: letters, poems and art pieces. There are too many items to list them all and, to do them justice, a visit to the exhibition is essential.
The exhibition is in the Whitland Memorial Hall, (Market Street, Whitland) and last day is tomorrow (Friday, November 9) when it will again be open between 10 am and 4 pm. Entry is free.
