The sports department at Whitland's Ysgol Dyffryn Taf went to the top of the class at last Sunday's 'Pearson Teaching Awards 2011' ceremony at London's Palace Theatre, when they scooped the Outstanding Team of the Year award.

The PE department's squad of teachers, including department head Graham Evans, Joanne Phillips, Judith Roberts, Dylan Blain, Bradley Davies, Mark Corby and Lucy Anthony, received the award in recognition of their unflagging passion for 'sport for all'.

The group were nominated for the award by ex-student and professional rugby player Dan Newton.

The department, which also set Welsh rugby stars such as Mike Phillips and Jonathan Davies on their way to success, was commended for having the talent to train elite young players in sports ranging from rugby and cricket to basketball and rowing.
