Last week, Whitland Memorial Hall opened its doors for the launch party of Y Cwtch Llaeth - Whitland, the new NCT Breastfeeding Support Group for Whitland and surrounding areas. Diana Beavan, a local health visitor, recognised the growing need for community breastfeeding support in the Whitland area and asked the West Wales branch of NCT if they'd like to get involved. Kal Black, West Wales branch coordinator and breastfeeding counsellor said: "We were delighted to be able to help. Between us, we began making plans to set up and run a breastfeeding support group in Whitland. "The launch party was a great success. We were stunned by the number of parents who came through the door, showing how great a need there is for breastfeeding support and a huge amount of community spirit. Mums, dads and grannies turned out for the party. They ranged from parents of tiny newborns looking for support, to mothers of older babies and children wanting to offer support. It's fantastic to be able to meet a community need in this way. "West Wales NCT would like to thank Whitland Co-op for donating refreshments to the group and local businesses, Station House Hotel in Whitland and Plum Vanilla Café in Narbeth for donating raffle prizes." Local mum Rebecca has been travelling all the way to Newcastle Emlyn to attend the NCT Breastfeeding Support Group. She says: "Everyone knows that breastfeeding is the best you can do for you baby, yet despite that, it's a hidden activity that nobody ever sees. In such a rural part of the country, you're never going to bump into a breastfeeding mum easily and there is just no other support available. It's great to know that there is going to be a group in Whitland now." NCT - the UK's largest parent charity, supports thousands of parents each year, offering accurate, evidence based information, relating to pregnancy, birth and parenting. NCT also builds networks of local parents who offer practical and emotional support to each other. Y Cwtch Llaeth - Whitland, runs on Thursday mornings 10.30 - 12.30 in Whitland Memorial Hall.
