Whitland RFC's Under 13 girls' rugby team has won a coaching session from Wales' Grand Slam stars in a once-in-a-lifetime training opportunity provided by leading energy provider SWALEC.
SWALEC, the national community partner of the Welsh Rugby Union, has named Whitland RFC and three other teams winners of its 2011/12 'SWALEC Junior Stars' competition.
It will be a sporting dream come true for the junior sides when they have a training session with Wales international coach, Rob Howley, and a host of international players, including Rhys Priestland. It will take place on April 26 at the WRU National Centre of Excellence, near Cardiff.
The competition was open to junior teams throughout Wales. Whitland RFC's U13 girls' team, Llanelli's Bryngwyn School's U14s, Denbigh RFC U14s and Bangor RFC's U13s were announced as competition finalists in their categories. They clinched their prizes by drumming up the most online votes from supporters.
Team manager, Suzanne Davies, said of their win: "The Whitland U13 girls touch side was formed this season. The team is very enthusiastic and willing to learn, and they are a credit to the club. It is a pleasure to be their team manager and they are really looking forward to the prize day."
The SWALEC Junior Stars competition was launched in November last year and invited nominations from Welsh junior rugby teams who have excelled both on and off the pitch.
Finalists were selected from more than 35 applications by WRU head of rugby performance and development, Joe Lydon, SWALEC head of sponsorship, Jonny Petrie, and Ryan Jones, Wales international player and SWALEC's brand ambassador.
The selection panel was extremely impressed by the high standard of nominations received and believes that the training session is a great way to reward these children who week-in, week-out fuel grassroots rugby.
Ryan Jones commented: "The SWALEC Junior Stars competition is a great initiative for rewarding junior players. The training session will give the winners an insight into how the international team trains. This is a real one-off experience that, hopefully, they will never forget."
SWALEC has renewed its sponsorship with the WRU as its National Community Partner until 2015. The four-year agreement will see SWALEC invest significantly to support community rugby in Wales and continue as the National Leagues and Cup Sponsor.
