With a smaller entry of lambs (566) forward at Whitland Mart on Tuesday, October 21, the peak demand was for the premium types which resulted in the top price per kilo of 119p for 40.50 kilos from Windsor and Son, Fforest Farm, Whitland, and an average of 104.79ppk and a top price per head of £52.60 for 48 kilos from Thomas, Llainlas, Meidrim. Non-approved lambs sold to £31.50.

An entry of over 400 cull ewes and rams was seen this week selling to a moderate trade with the 'heavier' type ewes selling to an average of £37.05 and the lighter ewes levelling at £17.71.

Ewes sold to a top price of £46 from Price, Bill Farm, Wolfscastle; rams to £36 from Jones, Llwynpiod, St. Clears, and wethers up to £25 from Holtham, Dolwerdd, near Crymych.

In the barren cow ring, an average of 61.23ppk was achieved, while overage heifers made up to 102.97p. The top price barrener at 105ppk was an 660 kilo Limousin from Evans, Pencraig Farm, Blaenwaun, which resulted in the top price per head of £695. Overage heifers sold to a top price per kilo of 112p for a 575 kilo Belgian Blue from Harris and Son, Ffosddu Fach, Whitland, which equated to the top price per head of £645.

The trade in fat cattle saw steers selling to an average price per kilo of 125.02p and peaked at 133.50p for a 675 kilo Aberdeen Angus from Rees, Avola Farm, Red Roses, equating to £901.

A small entry of calves forward saw a Limousin bull from Evans, Waterholmes Farm, Llawhaden, making £160 and heifer calves sold to £145 for a Limousin from Jones, New House Farm, Lampeter Velfrey.
