WITH reports of a heatwave headed for the UK, drivers opting for a more summery attire are urged to take care when choosing the footwear they drive in. Richard Evans, head of technical services at webuyanycar comments:

“With summer on the way and the weather improving across the country, more drivers may be switching their footwear from trainers to flip flops. However, it’s important to make considered choices with driving shoes as loose footwear can be dangerous as they can slip off and potentially jam pedals.

“The DVSA states that drivers should be able to remain in control and advise they wear suitable footwear when driving. So, whilst it’s not illegal to drive in flip flops, it is dependent on the ability to operate the controls safely. If drivers are stopped by police whilst driving barefoot or in unsuitable footwear and they’re considered not in control of the vehicle, they can be charged with driving without due care and attention which could lead to a fine.

“It’s important that drivers remain cautious of the type of shoes they wear whilst driving as those without a back, like a flip flop could cause trouble. Our guide on driving in flip flops will give drivers all the information to make sure they’re driving with the appropriate footwear.”
