Last Saturday (October 9) the wonderful new exhibition, Unlocking/Datgloi by Meirion Jones and Joanna Jones opened at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery.
The exhibition features 46 works by these two highly respected Welsh artists. Each work is an acrylic on board and is an exhibition that unlocks the rugged landscapes of south west Wales.
Of his work, Meirion states, “My paintings are inspired by light, be that the light which bounces off the Celtic Sea in Pembrokeshire, the lyrical ’contre jour light’ which brings a landscape to life with all its tonal relationships, or the light silhouetting a cockle woman at Swansea market. I return again and again to certain places in Wales which have a physical and emotional pull, familiar places in the native landscape whose rhythm and personality are timeless, and yet again constantly changing.”
Joanna says of her work, “The source of my inspiration is the topography of West Wales and the powerful sense of space and drama that this landscape holds. It is a continually changing land, and so is my response to it. As a result, my palette has become wider, based primarily on Earth colours punctuated with the occasional discordant note. The projection is a move in the direction of semi-abstraction and a less clearly defined emotional response to vast areas which are as unpredictable as they are overwhelming”
Museum Curator Mark Lewis said, “We are very familiar with Meirion’s beautiful work as he has shown with us twice in the past, alongside his late father, Aneurin Jones, and I have begun to familiarise myself with Joanna’s work via social media. The works look amazing together, complementing each other with their different styles. We are delighted to have this as our second post-lockdown show and I highly recommend everyone coming to see it. “
The sales exhibition runs until November 20. Currently the museum is open Thursday – Saturday, 10am – 4pm.
