Sir, The recently published letter certainly raises issues which deserve a reply from those involved in the approval, planning and financial control of the event. Surely it would be helpful for this information to published in this newspaper. One hopes that such a response will be forthcoming.
In this context it is accepted that there are many benefits derived from the influx of spectators and competitiors to Pembrokeshire. Having said this who pays the bill and those who receive the profit should be open to public scrutiny, particularly when the event is given £20,000 of taxpayers’ money.
It seems fair to assume therefore that county officers, councillors and entrepreneurs would want to provide the taxpayers with an explanation of the rationale behind their decisions and the consequent justification.
Against this backdrop it should be remembered that during the past three years Council Tax has risen in leaps and bounds as have parking charges, whilst many free car parks are now metered. We are also faced with a further curtailment of refuse collection. This austerity policy is often blamed for the constraint imposed on public services, but surely this is even more reason to guarantee that public money is spent wisely.
Another cogent factor which needs careful consideration is the extent of the impact of road closures.?Clearly the elderly and disabled are disadvantaged when this occurs more frequently as events proliferate.
It must not be forgotten that the use of public roads and taxpayers’ money must involve large elements of mutual self interest. Commerical development is equally important as is the quality of life for the community. The balance between the two must be maintained.
Is it time for those who have the responsibility for all the decisions to furnish us with the important details which could provide enlightenment.
Transparency is the watchword. Now that would be a result.

Saundersfoot
