The chances of Tenby staging any of the popular charitable Summer Spectacular events this year are in the balance, as organisers await updated guidance on outdoor events during the pandemic.
The popular events which draw large crowds down to the resort’s harbour area, to enjoy live music, entertainment, food and drink and a stunning fireworks display, to raise money for good causes, were scrapped last year due to the Covid crisis.
The Rotary Club of Tenby who usually host two of the events over July and August and Tenby and District Lions Club who stage the ‘paella festival’ on the August Bank Holiday Sunday have already confirmed that they have decided to put any plans for their respective ‘specs’ on the back-burner until 2022.
“We had a meeting with senior members of both the Lions and Rotary and decided that it was not going to feasible to get arrangements sorted for the summer, with a decision on large outdoor events taking place this year by the Welsh Government still undecided,” said Rob Mayhew of Tenby Lions.
“Poor weather also hit us hard the last time the Lions staged a Summer Spec, so we’ve decided to leave it for 2021, and come back next year with a bang all being well,” he added.
Tenby Round Table who host two of the Summer Specs have announced that they are still waiting for updated guidance before making a decision on whether to hold any of their charitable events this year, including the annual Beer Festival which normally takes place indoors at Tenby’s De Valence Pavilion in the Autumn.
“At the moment we are waiting to see what the circumstances are and specially what guidance is forthcoming from Pembrokeshire County Council and the Welsh Government before making a definite decision on what, if any, events we will be able to host this year,” said a spokesperson for the Round Table.
“We are keen to follow all guidance to make sure we keep our community, and visitors safe, but we feel it’s still too early to completely rule out any events, especially that are that far off.
“We will always act in the best interest of our community and follow all official guidance. As soon as we have a clearer picture of how our events will look this year we’ll be sure to let everyone know.”
