A personal collection of Tenby Pottery belonging to a local businesswoman is to be featured on Sunday’s Antiques Roadshow.

Sarah Bolwell, of The Mooring, Tenby, started collecting the pottery after regular customers Boo and Tony Markes, the potters themselves, gave her a plant pot as a present about four Christmases ago, along with a pin dish for every member of staff.

“I loved it and have since been collecting the pottery from charity shops and boot sales,” explained Sarah. “I have some of it on display at home, but we also use the mugs and plates that I have so it’s not just sitting on the shelf.

“Boo and Tony have an amazing skill not many people have and I felt that whilst I was excited to pick up a vase for around £5 or so, they deserved more recognition for their work.”

So with this thought, Sarah decided to take her collection along to the Antiques Roadshow valuation day at Pembroke Castle last September.

“It was my birthday treat with my husband and little boy and it was a real fun day out after such a busy summer,” she added.

Sarah’s story was picked up by the producers and will be featured on Sunday’s programme which will be shown on BBC1 at 8 pm.

And what’s more, when she’s being interviewed, one of the onlookers, Jenny Axon, reveals she had worked for Boo and Tony as a 14-year-old!

“We have fame at last,” smiled Boo.

“It’s nice to still be here to see it and to know the pottery will be around long after we are gone,” added Tony.

Meanwhile, general manager at Pembroke Castle, Jon Williams, said the whole team were ‘very excited’ about seeing the two shows, the second of which will be shown on Sunday, April 16.

“It was a brilliant experience working alongside the BBC team,” said Jon.

“They were all highly professional, polite and fun to work with. I’m sure that the show will bring to life some very interesting stories, and we hope the show will do a good job of showing off everything that Pembroke has to offer its visitors.

“One of the highlights of the whole experience was seeing the reaction of the show’s producers when they realised just how many people had turned up to the event. We were expecting 2,000 or so and by the end of the day over 4,000 people had come in to have items looked at or just to watch the show live. They told us later that Pembroke was the best attended show of the whole series, and that is the reason why they have made two shows out of the day, so I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along.

“Fiona Bruce, the presenter, couldn’t have been more accommodating, spending time with most of the staff, volunteers and our visitors. She really seemed to enjoy her time here and was very impressed with the castle and town.”

BBC 1’s Antiques Roadshow, filmed last September at Pembroke Castle, will be shown this Sunday, April 9, and the following one, April 16, at 8 pm.
