Ways of making shops, restaurants and businesses in Tenby more ‘dementia friendly’ have been discussed by a group looking to achieve a Dementia Friendly status for the town.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Clr. Mrs. Samantha Skyrme-Blackhall told her colleagues that a further meeting had been held at the Mayor’s Parlour recently to highlight ways to help the resort moving forward.
Clr. Skyrme-Blackhall admitted that making whole sale changes for the town could take years, so the group want to take small steps to start with that can make everything more accessible in the town and a make a big difference to those suffering with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
“We are encouraging traders to meet up with us to look at training staff members to become ‘Dementia Friends’ so when someone enters a premises, they know that there will be someone there to help deal with the situation.
“We’re looking at introducing a ‘Forget-me-not’ style badge so that these people can be easily identified.
Clr. Skyrme-Blackhall also said that they would be looking at bringing the ‘Dementia bus’ which gives delegates an experience of what dementia might be like by using specialist equipment and creating a simulated environment into Tenby.
“We’ll have another meeting in the New Year to look at various ways of pushing things forward. Meetings have been very positive so far with lots of feedback from organisations looking to support this,” she added.
The Facebook page ‘Dementia Friendly Tenby’ is now up and running.
