Tenby Community Fridge is a new project set up for the town - which aims to brings people together, address social isolation and provide people with the opportunity to access healthy food, try something new and save money.
A community fridge is a space where anyone who lives nearby can exchange surplus food, including businesses.
People and businesses are becoming more aware of food waste, and it can often be a hard thing to avoid.
A community fridge can be accessed by anyone in the community, and anyone can give to or take food from the fridge! There are some rules on what you can and cannot put in the fridge (for health and safety reasons).
“At the moment, we are looking for people to be volunteer fridge monitors,” said one of the initiative’s organisers.
“This involves ensuring food stocks in the Community Fridge are safe and good to eat, and for maintaining fridge cleanliness and hygiene, at either the beginning or end of a day.
“No experience is necessary. Training will be provided including for a Food Safety Level 1 Certificate. You need to be able to work independently, but you can buddy up with another fridge monitor, so people of all abilities can participate in this project.
“A positive attitude, enthusiasm and dedication to reducing food waste and helping in the community would be great assets.
“A shift will take one to two hours and we would like people to do at least one regular shift a week.”
What will you gain from volunteering on this project?
• Being part of an innovative food sustainability project that helps to save food by reducing food waste.
• Gain training and experience in food handling, storage and hygiene protocols.
• Further your communication skills and demonstrate that you can work independently, whilst being part of a team and using your initiative.
