Tavernspite CP School has become quite famous for its excellent work and commitment to environmental and eco projects.
Their success has been further recognised by being recently awarded with the 'Platinum' Eco-Schools Award - the fourth Green Flag Award.
To receive this accolade, the school underwent a rigorous assessment process conducted by Mr. Gerry Taylor, Eco-Schools Wales, and his team. The assessors were most impressed by the staff and pupils' continued enthusiasm for the programme and the excellent work carried out throughout the school site.
They were particularly impressed with the comprehensive action plan contributed to by the pupils and parents, the 'Climate Cops' doing spot checks throughout the school, the outdoor school's work at Colby Woodlands, the schools Fairtrade work and its supportive link to a school in Zanzibar.
Headteacher Kevin Phelps said: "We are delighted to receive this award and understandably very proud. It has been a whole school effort and we have worked hard in these areas for a very long time.
"The children at Tavernspite School have a very well developed knowledge of eco and sustainable issues and this has become embedded into the life of the school.
"I would particularly like to thank one of my teachers, Mrs. Houghton, who co-ordinates all of our eco-project work and also the Pembrokeshire Sustainable Schools scheme who are a wonderful support to schools in Pembrokeshire."
The school was delighted to welcome Mr. Peter Davies, Sustainable Futures Commissioner and chairman of the Climate Change Commission for Wales, recently who enjoyed a tour around the school.
He said: "Over 90 per cent of schools in Wales participate in the Eco-Schools programme but a very small number have received the top platinum award.
"As an ex-pupil, I am very proud that Tavernspite is now one of these schools. Pupils and teachers have shown how much they want to protect the environment -they are an inspiration to all of us in Wales."
Receiving this award means that Tavernspite School has now joined the elite group of platinum eco-schools in Wales and will be invited to attend the annual national eco committee event. The school has been asked to showcase its work in an upcoming environmental education event.
