A Tenby county councillor has said that it is ‘staggering’ to witness the ‘stupidity and irresponsibility’ of visitors that have arrived in the area over the weekend, ignoring Government advice issued during the Coronavirus crisis to stay at home.
Councillor Michael Williams, who represents the Tenby North ward on Pembrokeshire County Council stated: “The most important thing I would say is to those who have descended on Tenby in recent days, and there is no easy way to say this, but go home!
“It has been staggering to witness the stupidity and irresponsibility of those that have arrived in the area.
“In the centre of Tenby on Saturday, one would have thought it was a normal summer day with large groups completely ignoring the advice given on social distancing!
“We live in an area which has a health authority which at the best of time creaks, by moving in to this area you are putting a huge extra strain on services.
“I note that in Norway, the Government has banned those people that own second homes from visiting them. This should be urgently enacted in Wales,” he continued.
The First Minister Mark Drakeford issued a statement on Sunday about travelling in Wales and social distancing
“Self-isolation for those who have symptoms and social distancing by everyone is absolutely essential at this stage if we are to delay the spread of this virus and save lives,” he said.
“We all need to follow this advice now to protect each other and our families and to help ensure our NHS is not overwhelmed.
“Social distancing includes avoiding all but essential travel and if people don’t follow this advice we will have no choice but to use powers to enforce it,” he added.
