The 37 walkers who gathered near the TIC at 10.30 am last Saturday, were obviously undeterred by the leaden skies (writes Val Coates Rees). After the briefing by Val, both groups, the Speedies, led by Val and supported by Donna, and the Steadies, led by Tony Ha with walk leaders, Janice, Barbara and Paul, all set off out of town, past the golf course to Black Rock. Here, the Speedies did an extension walk to Crossing Cottage and back to the bridge over the railway where they followed the Steadies onto the South Beach.
The tide was out and the vast expanse of beach revealed Tenby’s location on the cliff and the islands; Caldey across the water and to St. Catherine’s and fort (which only becomes an island at high tide), not forgetting the iconic Castle Hill with its keep and cannon.
Folks were making the most of their time on the beach and the lifeguards were at the water’s edge, while out to sea the Caldey boats were going back and forth.
The walkers’ optimism about the weather was justified as the few drops of rain that fell as they walked up into the town did not turn into a shower.
Refreshments were taken at the Billy Can which could accommodate all the walkers.
This weekend, weather permitting, there will be walks on Caldey. Meet at the ticket booth at 9.45 am.
If the weather conditions are unsuitable, there will be a town walk.
